A flow wrap machine, also known as a horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) machine or pillow packing machine, is an automated system for wrapping solid products in flexible plastic film. It continuously forms a tube of film around a product, seals the package, and cuts it into individual units at high speed. How flow wrappers work The process consists of five main steps: Film unwinding: The machine takes a continuous roll of heat-sealable film, such as BOPP, PE, or foil laminates. Product feeding: Individual products are loaded onto a conveyor belt, either manually or automatically. Film forming: As the products are transported, the film is guided through a forming plow that folds it into a continuous tube shape around the items. Sealing and cutting: A series of heated rollers and jaws create a continuous bottom or center seal, as well as end seals for each product. A cutting mechanism then separates the packaged items into individual pouches. Discharge: The finished, sealed packages are released onto a conveyor for further processing, like boxing or shipping. Types of flow wrappers Horizontal flow wrappers: This is the most common type, where products are transported horizontally through the machine. It's highly efficient and versatile for handling a wide variety of product sizes and shapes. Rotary jaw flow wrappers: These machines are designed for high-speed, continuous packaging of small, uniform products like candy bars and snack cakes. Box-motion flow wrappers: These use a slower, more controlled sealing motion, making them ideal for heavier, taller, or irregularly shaped products. Common applications Flow wrap machines are used in numerous industries, from food to medical. Food and confectionery: Baked goods (biscuits, cakes), candies, chocolate bars, snacks, and frozen foods. Pharmaceuticals: Medical devices, sterile products, and medication that require sanitary and tamper-evident packaging. Cosmetics and personal care: Soap bars, makeup items, and personal care products. Industrial: Small hardware, components, and automobile parts that need protection from dust and moisture. E-commerce: Rapidly wrapping individual items for shipping.
